Canned Craft

Canned Craft

Craft in a can. Well, the trend is real.  Perhaps it was never a trend at all, I would like think the ladder, I have always been a fan of canned beer verse bottle beer.  Of course you only really had the major brands in cans Michelob, Miller Lite, Budwiser, Coors and tall cans of Old English and Pabst Blue Ribbon.  At least that’s all that I had or new about.  Now however, there are tons of great Craft Beer in cans, it’s like a canned Craft Beer Revolution. Some new breweries came right out of the gate with canned Craft.  Golden Road Brewery in Los Angeles, Ca was one of them.  Although they are not the first with Craft Beer in a can they’re the first i think of in Southern California that said, “Here we are world, have a CAN of Craft Beer.”  I happen to find Craft Beer in a can to be refreshing in a Craft Beer word that can seem a little uppity about beer drinking.  Sometime when I see a can of Craft Beer it reminds me that Craft Beer is still beer.  Much my time is spent drinking Craft Beer at local Southern California Breweries and if you know anything at all about certain parts of Southern California you know how elitist it can be.  In some cases Craft Beer culture has taken on that elitist attitude.

From Craft Beer nerds to brewers and “scientist” to the hipster twenty somethings that make their local brewery their home away from home. There is defiantly an attitude of who knows the most, who’s had it first and have you had… going on at any local brewery.  Canned Craft Beer to me kind of takes that elitist mentality out of the equation and at least creates the feel of a level playing field when it comes to drinking Craft Beer.  Let me explain.  Canned beer in general is looked upon as party hard, crush the can on your head, blue collar working persons beer.  Where bottled beer is a little more high brow and elegant for the more sophisticated crowd.  So looking for canned Craft Beer has become a new thing for me.  I guess you can say it started with Golden RoadOskar BluesSierra Nevada and now Modern Times.  Modern Times I had for the first time about a week ago and let me say, one of the best Craft Beers, in a can, bottle or draft I have ever had.  A friend of mind told me Modern Times “Blazing World Amber” might have cracked his top 5.  I thought that was a bold statement from a person I trust to make great Craft Beer decisions.

I had my first Modern Times was while I was riding my bike so I don’t think I got the full appreciation of that Amber.  So once I got off my bike I had the Saison from Modern Times and have to say, it was one of the better Saisons I’ve had.  But this is not about just Modern Times but rather about the explosion of canned Craft Beer.

A great source for to find tons of canned Craft Beer and information about canned Craft Beer is www.craftcans.com I love the dedication and enthusiasm this site has for canned Craft Beer, they have over 1300 canned Craft Beers archived on their site.  I suggest using this site before shopping around for canned Craft Beers or if you’re at your local liquor store grab a six pack or single can of Craft Beer to try it out.  If you don’t know how to decide, play art critic and get the one that has the best art work on the can.  I think that’s another thing I like about canned Craft Beer, the can.  I collect a lot of the bottles of the Craft Beer I drink as I am sure many people do but canned Craft Beer seems to top most bottle art I have seen.  So if you don’t know what to get, choose the style of Craft Beer you like and then go for the art on the can, or if you want to know before you buy visit www.craftcans.com and make a more knowledgable choice.
